ίδια τον ένα και τον άλλο;
ποιος τελευταίος θα γελάσει;

  1. Karyotakis!  I am struck by his dislike for those who put on aristocratic airs.  At the risk of transposing something…(:-O?  ;-)), "…the monocle which helps you to see only from the side, and to greet only so many as who appear to be aristocratic…"

    I’m guessing that this was from his Preveza period.  Is that correct?  The disgust and disillusionment seem to be coming from the same place.  I looked for this on the internet hoping to find a reference to this and gain some context but didn’t find anything.

    • I don’t know when you posted this, but I have a feeling that it is from the period you mention. According to a bit from wikipedia (Λέγεται προφορικά, ότι “ο Καρυωτάκης ήρθε σε ρήξη με τον τότε Νομάρχη ο οποίος πιθανώς εχρηματίζετο με λίρες Μικρασιατών στο θέμα της μη ισότιμης και δίκαιης παροχής αγροτεμαχίων” = It’s said that the prefect was probably bribed and wasn’t fair and square on the land issue) and after reading the poem I find a connection between the poem and the quotation.

  2. At times like this I wish I had majored in Greek instead of Latin… couldn’t you have a Roman poet on your site? Just once? Or an English translation for those of us who are not fortunate enough to know Greek?
